The Christmas goose is getting fat...

...Sadly, though, it's not just the Christmas goose that's put on weight. Although I was down to 82.9 kilos three weeks ago, I'm now up to 84.8 kilos. It's my fault, really – I've spent the past fortnight in an orgy of cooking, eating and indolence (highlights have included a fantastic fore-rib of beef, served with spuds roasted in goose fat and pillowy yorkshire puds, and a slow-roast shoulder of lamb that just fell apart at the prod of a fork).

I'm hoping, though, that the weight that's gone on so fast will come off again equally quickly. My knee is also on the mend and, over the past few days, I've been running again. It's amazing how quickly you can lose condition thought – I did two miles (3.5 km) the other day and nearly died in the attempt. Five ks looks almost as unachievable as it did a month or so ago... Still, one step back and two steps forward is the order of the day, so I'm about to go for the third run of the week. If I don't kill myself out there, I'll be back in the next day or two with some updates.

Hi Natasha,

I came across your blog a couple of months ago, and love it. Over the last year I've been trying to lose weight but like you, love to cook (I also find it hard to make a bottle of wine last 2 nights..). There are some lovely recipes on here. I think the last I tried was the fantastic Asian spiced butternut squash- really unusual, went down a storm at home, thankyou!

Hope you don't mind if I share my current top tips for weight loss and general wellbeing...

Now that the Xmas excess is over I tend to kick off the New Year by having a month off booze; it really helps with the motivation to exercise; gives you that little bit extra energy; and does wonders for the mood (in the dark days of January if I can't manage to get somewhere sunny for a week this is really important). Last year I managed to keep off till mid February before my friends got fed up with the smugness and sat me down with a bottle of Catena Zapata from the 90s. Well, if you're going to go...

I also treat myself to posh water. I read in your blog you had trouble drinking lots of the stuff, but I can't recommend it enough for weight loss. I put away 1.5l Evian a day and more; by the end of Jan I'll be practically bounding out of bed like a kid, and my skin will be noticeably glowy! I think you stop needing the loo all the time after a bit.

Glad you recommend Fat Girl Slim- top humane diet book. Her ethos seems similar to yours, and again, fab recipes.

Enough waffle from me, but all the best for the New Year, keep up the good work!

Thanks Maddy,

Glad you like the recipes – and I really appreciate the tips. Although, having said that, it's difficult for me – given my job – to come off the booze entirely for January (although I try and keep things to a minimum).

Happy new year to you too!
